Last week I revealed to you that the relationship between myself and Donley at want2vape had progressed past friendly reviewer-vendor status. I did so because I wanted to conceal nothing from my readers, and also to assure you that our friendship would not impact the objectivity under which I scrutinized his product.
This relationship continues to grow, and I feel that before too much longer I will be compelled to cease reviewing want2vape product in the interest of possible bias on my part. Before that happens, there are a couple of his juices that I wanted to share my impressions about, so I am going to hurry up and get those to you this week. Just remember, I never hid anything about this relationship from you, and the following review represents my honest, unbiased opinion despite that relationship. You'll just have to take my word for it. After I review the three or four juices of his that I really wanted to do articles on this week, in the future I'll pass that honor on to my friends in the vaping community.
Today I am doing a review-comparison between want2vape RY4 and want2vape Rock Star, which is want2vape's own twist on the RY4 genre. These two weren't really on my radar, but after vaping Rock Star this weekend I wanted to take it to The Lab.
I will be vaping these 18mg 70PG/30VG juices at 3.7v on my Bombshell with a Cisco 1.5 ohm atty. Previously want2vape juice had a predominantly VG ratio. In the interest of performance and atty life Donley has switched the entire line to 70PG/30VG. This is my personal preference, as I like the throat hit this provides and it produces much cleaner burning juice. For those of you who prefer a different ratio, want2vape does offer most of their juices as flavoring concentrates that can be mixed at 20% strength in your base liquid.
The nose of the RY4 is a perfume-y sweet burnt caramel.
The flavor on inhale of the RY4 is kind of a generic RY4. This is the reason I almost didn't review these juices. One, despite our friendship I find the RY4 just kind of "meh", and I thought the Rock Star was an energy drink flavor til he brought it to my attention that it wasn't. The throat hit of the RY4 is average, providing adequate punctuation for a pseudo-tobacco vape.
The flavor on exhale is more of that generic RY4. I can't really say that I can isolate tobacco, and the caramel isn't creamy and sweet like the better RY4s out there. It's a darker, less sweet caramel, almost coffee-like in a very faint way. I've never had the Chinese originals that inspired the hosts of RY4s out there, but perhaps this juice is modeled after that target. Vapor production is thick, and I wonder if perhaps the sample I am vaping has a heavier VG concentration than 70/30.
My overall feelings toward want2vape RY4 are that it is an average RY4. Nothing off-putting about it, and the performance is good, but it's uninspiring. It's not too shabby, but there are other RY4s I would reach for first.
Now on to want2vape Rock Star.
The nose of Rock Star is sweet and buttery and I get the impression of a tobacco base. Instantly this is a much more appealing juice. The aroma makes your senses sit up and pay attention.
The flavor on inhale of the Rock Star is sweet on the tip of your tongue. The quality of the caramel is sweet, creamy and bright. The sweetness almost has a honey element to it. It's really interesting, and the quality of flavor is one that makes it hard to put the bottle away. Throat hit strikes me as better than the RY4. It's not up there with my analog replacement juices, but it is more than adequate for an RY4.
The flavor on exhale is darker than on inhale, and less cloying. It really comes across as a tobacco vape on exhale, with a shade of a caramel-like flavor running through it. I say "caramel-like" because on exhale it isn't overtly milky and creamy the way a more pronounced caramel comes through. There is a really nice balance of elements here, and the flavors compliment each other instead of fight for your attention. I do get notes of milk and creaminess, but they're subdued and don't come through on every exhale. Vapor production is consistent with a PG blend, and I would wager that this sample is mixed at 70PG/30VG. It burns cleanly and performs well.
want2vape RY4 isn't bad by any means, but it's the sort of juice that won't ever get vaped again after its time in The Lab. The want2vape Rock Star on the other hand is one of the very best RY4s I've vaped, eclipsed only by the It's Alive! Award winners from Backwoods Brew and Vaperite. RY4s were kind of a gateway vape for me, and I turned to them daily in my early life as a vaper. Today they don't really call my name anymore, and it's rare that I vape one. want2vape Rock Star is a juice that I will vape the bottle dry. Very good juice, and an RY4 that can stand proud in any company. Heartily recommended.
