One thing that has to be said about Backwoods Brew juice is that it is generally not ready to vape right out of the mail. I like the RY4 right out of the box, but the rest need time in The Juice Cellar to achieve their full potential. These juices are mixed to order and any one who is disappointed with a Backwoods Brew juice should put it away and revisit it weekly. I find, depending on the juice, that it takes 1-4 weeks for most of Don's juice to shine. I haven't had a single juice from Don that I didn't like, but if I based my impressions on ripping the box open immediately and dripping them that wouldn't be the case.
I was reminded of this last night when I went down to The Juice Cellar and retrieved Backwoods Brew Maple Tobacco. Previously this juice left me cold, which was a big disappointment because maple is my single favorite flavor in the world. I have loved those little maple sugar candies since I was a kid, and when I have a bottle of real maple syrup, I hide it so little Igor doesn't squander it on frozen waffles. Before last night when I dripped some of this juice I got almost no maple at all, which was a huge letdown.
I noticed right away that the Backwoods Brew Maple Tobacco looked darker when I grabbed the bottle last night. Most of Don's juices that I have run from honey colored to amber, but last night the Maple Tobacco was positively dark, as in beer bottle dark. When I opened the bottle I was greeted by a delicious maple scent, and the dripping commenced on my 3.7v Copper 510.
I am vaping the Backwoods Brew Maple Tobacco at 18mg. At 18mg all Backwoods Brew juices have above average throat hit and vapor production. Initial impressions are again of a predominantly tobacco character. The tobacco base in this juice has a darker profile than the Honey Flue Nut, and reminds me of Don's RY4. That may simply be a function of the honey lightening the impressions the Honey Flue Nut makes, but both the BWB RY4 and BWB Maple Tobacco strike me as being heartier. There is a fresh, vibrant quality to the tobacco in this juice. While I like a tobacco juice that tastes like a quality analog, I really, really like when a juice steps forward and dares to taste like a good tobacco shop smells. This juice has that mouth watering, lively tobacco taste, and it really hits the spot.
The maple makes its presence known on inhale when you let some of the vapor drift out of your mouth and into your nose. It very much has the aromatic quality of a medium dark pure maple syrup. The vape itself is predominantly tobacco, with an eminently satisfying sweet maple finish.
The excellent tobacco base, the delicious and very natural maple element, and the above average performance of this juice combine to send it over the top. Backwoods Brew Maple Tobacco deservedly earns the Vapenstein It's Alive! Award. Highly recommended.
