I'm on the hunt for a Good, Big, Cheap Custard before I break down and just start DIYing a GVC clone recipe. I've got custards from several vendors aging in The Juice Cellar, and I'll be going through them as I feel they're ready.
A lot of custards are really just creamy vanilla vapes. That doesn't put me off, but what I'm really looking for is a super egg-y, rich custard with an almost sour note to it. How did I go from NETs to custards? Your guess is as good as mine. I just can't get enough custard right now, so I'm running with it.
Today's review juice is Full Moon by Steam Juice, a variation on their French vanilla custard with hazelnut added. I have to say that this vendor made a great first impression on me. Their prices are excellent, they offer a tasty assortment of original flavors, they will make you any level of nic strength you want, and they sell big bottles. I bought an assortment of four 30ml bottles to sample their juice, and even the ones I didn't love I thought were good. As a teaser, one of their juices became an instant favorite from the first time I vaped it, and I will definitely be back for big bottles.
Lastly I have retired my six week old iPV Mini. Actually I gave it to The Creature, who expressed an interest in vaping. I gave him the iPV Mini and an Aqua v2 and some juice to help him get started off right. Two days ago I received an Hcigar HB DNA 40, which is a tidy little box mod with an authentic Evolv DNA 40 that can be yours for less than $120. So far I'm very happy with the box. You'll notice that I am vaping at a lower wattage than normal. That's because apparently the SX130 in the iPV Mini was not terribly accurate, so to get the same vape on my DNA that I got from the iPV at 28.5w I had to drop down to 22w.
I will be vaping this 3mg 70% VG juice at 22w with a .52 ohm build in my Kanger Subtank Mini, mounted on an Hcigar HB DNA 40 mod. The flavor boost is applied by Steam Juice with no effort on your part to all their high VG juices. I feel all 70% VG or better juices need it so good on them for doing extra flavor by default. I'll also note here that all my builds, dripper and tank, are single coil. I'll note in the review that it's a dual if I do any reviews on a dual coil build.
The nose of this juice is creamy vanilla.
The flavor on inhale is butter and vanilla, and here some of that nut may be peeking in. The overall presentation is subtle. Not bland, just not in your face. Throat/lung hit is mild.
The flavor on exhale has a lot more of the hazelnut. It's not an egg-y custard base, more creamy vanilla. It lacks the richness of an egg-y custard, but it's also very easy to vape. The flavor is again, subtle. Not bland, just not shouting to get your attention. I prefer juicier, more saturated flavor. Vapor production seems standard for 70%, and when I drip this in my Troll the clouds are just as thick as any other high VG juice. Vapor density is subjective like flavor when you're sitting alone vaping, so don't get too wrapped up in my descriptions. All high VG juice makes plenty of vapor on modern hardware.
This was my least favorite of the juices I received from Steam Juice. Custard with added hazelnut sounds like a great idea, but the presentation here is too mellow to let the flavors shine IMO. The custard is of the creamy vanilla variety and lacks the richness I love in a good custard juice, and you have to look for the hazelnut. I get it, Mrs. Dr. has exclusively vaped Vapor Station Tampa for years, and that whole line of tobacco vapes is heavy on hazelnut to the point where you don't taste much else. Steam probably didn't want to overpower this recipe with the hazelnut, but it could have used a little more.
The juice is good, it vapes well, wicks great, is easy to vape all day because it has a mild flavor profile. The flavors are good, if mild. There isn't anything off or artificial about it. It's my least favorite of the selection I got from Steam and I didn't love it, but it's by no means bad. If you like mellower flavor presentation this one may be for you. It's certainly an easy to get along with vape, it just didn't sing for me.
