Thick Vanilla Custard by Steam Juice was one of my very first stops on the road to the perfect custard vape. I've vaped about 150ml of this stuff, so these aren't my first impressions and I am pretty familiar with what this juice has to offer.
I emailed Steam prior to ordering the 120ml bottle I'm vaping now, and asked if they automatically adjusted flavoring percentages for higher VG ratios. They don't offer a flavor boost option. They responded that they do, but I would still request it in the comments for the product you order, because this juice tastes standard to me, which at 70% VG means that I feel the flavor is muted. One thing I do appreciate about Steam is that you can order your juice in any nicotine strength you want, just put it in the comments. When I'm home all day I tend to overvape, and even 3mg makes me a little sick. That sounds crazy I know, but sub ohm vaping drastically alters juice consumption and the efficiency at which your juice is vaporized. I order 2mg from Steam, and it scratches the itch and doesn't make me sick on the days when my device never leaves my hand.
Grant's Vanilla Custard is the benchmark custard vape. I've never vaped the original, but the recipe is well known and I've DIY'd it using both Capella's v1 and Capella's v2. Both make for a very different juice, and both are delicious. I've been adding small percentages of other flavorings, searching for my own unique version of the GVC Clone. In fact, expect to see some DIY reviews here in the future, and I will share my recipes with you guys. GVC Clone using Capella's v1 is what I judge all other custards by, and it's no surprise that most custards have a similar flavor profile to this formulation. I have yet to vape a custard that is as good as GVC Clone using v1, hence it is the benchmark all other custard vapes are judged against.
I'll be vaping this 2mg 70% VG juice at 23.5w on a 0.45 ohm 2mm 5 wrap flattened 26ga build in my Subtank Mini on my Hcigar HB DNA 40. I must be wrapping my coils tighter than I used to, because I used to be able to count on this build reading 0.52-0.55 ohms, but the last four I've wrapped have all measured 0.45. I stick with the 26ga 2mm on this tank because the flavor is really good with this build. I actually prefer the way a 3mm 24ga build vapes and especially prefer how those wick in the ST Mini, but the flavor is noticeably not as good as the 2mm so I deal with wicking issues for flavor. ST Minis have good flavor but can have difficulty wicking due to the tiny juice inlets in the rba section so coil selection and how you wick are very important in this tank. This juice wicks well and uses pretty thin VG like the stuff I buy from Bull City. Thank goodness for aqueous VG if you're a tank user. Old fashioned thick as honey VG is a nightmare in these tanks.
The nose of this juice is vanilla forward custard.
The flavor on inhale is a mellow custard. Everything is there. The egg-y richness is mild, the vanilla forward but not overpowering. I don't get any butter or graham cracker from this one, just a straight custard. It _may_ have added butter or French Vanilla contributing to the richness, but it isn't overwhelming. Core satisfaction is good and this juice wicks without any help from me.
The flavor on exhale is a recap of what you get coming in, with the richness getting a little more depth on the way out. Most days I do feel that this juice is a little light on flavor. If I've gotten my best results using 15-20% flavorings in my homemade stuff, this juice feels like a 10% mix, which makes it very palate dependent. On a good day this juice gives me juicy, saturated flavor, on an off day the flavor is muted and steamy. This is where I'd like to be able to select a flavor boost on their site, because I feel that at 70% VG this needs more flavor. Increasing the power to 26w, or vaping this at 40w with a dripper does open up the flavor a little, but doesn't drastically alter the vape like their Golden Road. Vapor production is consistent with what you'd expect from a 70% VG juice.
This is a custard vape that doesn't miss anything. All the elements I look for in a custard are there, I'd just like the flavor bumped up a little. My DIY always tastes great, but I use a higher percentage of flavorings. That's my preference. Some days TVC is perfect and I vape tank after tank, but most days I feel like the flavor is a little muted.
Like every other juice I've vaped from Steam, the performance is great, they wick well in a tank, and they're coil friendly. So if my review of this juice feels a little average, know that I don't feel that way about the vendor. I feel their juice is way above average, and they're selling it at way below average prices. That makes them my overall number one commercial juice maker, and I recommend them without hesitation. You can buy a 240ml jug of this juice for under $50, and if you don't want to make your own custard vape this one is the best dollar for dollar custard out there, and I bet if you asked them to bump up the flavor for you they would. I'd like to see them just add that option to the product pages of their juices.
I rank this and Charlie Noble Charlie's Custard as the two best commercial custards I've vaped so far.
