For over four years I only vaped tobacco and pseudo-tobacco vapes. I think part of that was that in the beginning I needed something familiar. I always loved tobacco in all its forms, and I think back then most of the juices with really good throat hit were tobacco vapes. Also, you have to remember that old 510 and 306 attys coils were very prone to gunk up quickly. At $5 a pop you wanted your attys to last, so Halo and Vapor Station with their high PG ratios and clean burning became the default vapes here at Castle Vapenstein and stayed that way. My own line of eliquid was the worst coil gunking juice ever made, if you appreciate irony.
For the three years that I was absent as a public vaping figure I vaped Halo Captain Jack and Torque 56 pretty much exclusively. Mrs. Dr. has vaped Vapor Station Tampa and nothing but since the beginning. She still does, although now a version that I cloned and make here in The Lab. When we put down our 306s and started checking out the changes in vaping that had occured during my three year absence, Mrs. Dr. stuck with mouth to lung at low wattage. I put 2 ohm builds in her Lemo Drop and she vapes around 10w. Even so, she is down to 6mg versus the 16mg she used to vape.
When I started sub ohming a drastic change in juice was necessary. 80% PG and 18mg was not going to work. I went to maxVG and down to 6mg, but even with 6mg I was getting nic sick. I'm a chain vaper and kind of absently hit my device all day. I went to 3mg, and I could still feel the nic, which bothered me a little because I'm a cigar smoker and am pretty much immune to nicotine. I've now acclimated to 3mg and can vape it without getting sick, but I usually make my juice between 2-3mg and usually closer to 2mg.
One of the first juices I got when I started sub ohming was Nick's Blissful Brews Smoked Custard Plus, an It's Alive! winner. I was instantly infatuated with custard as a vape. Good flavor that doesn't seem to diminish as you vape it, and more importantly, great core satisfaction. I use the term core satisfaction a lot, and it's the modern version of the throat hit we used to talk about so much. Core satisfaction for me is the feeling that my itch is being scratched. That good feeling of throat and chest hit.
So an obsession with custard began and I set out to vape them all. If you're talking about custard vapes, one of the vendors who always enters into the conversation is Gremlin Juice. Let's take this three month old sample straight to The Lab for analysis.
I will be vaping this 3mg 70% VG juice at 33.5w on a 0.26 ohm build in my Cthulhu on my BMI.
The nose of this juice is primarily vanilla.
The flavor on inhale is buttery and sweet. Core satisfaction is above average and the juice has a nice hit to it, although I get the impression the nic base is not as clean as what I use at home. If I turn this up to 40-50w it's a little rough, and not from the heat. Also the extra power didn't open up the flavor, so I remained at 33.5w while vaping this. Since I switched to Vapers Tek nicotine it seems like I can taste other bases now. That's not a bad thing I guess unless the juice tastes like insecticide to me, but it does tell me that Vapers Tek base is super clean, and that is exactly why I keep using it even though it isn't the cheapest.
The flavor on exhale is vanilla-y and there is a hint of egg-y richness. Overall I feel this juice is underflavored. That's a positive for you if you don't like saturated vapes, but I do like saturated flavor so it's a minus for me. This juice is flavored to what feels like about 33% less flavoring than I use on my own custards, so your mileage may vary. You'll either find this perfect, or agree with me that it's light on flavor. The flavor is good, it's just thin. Vapor production is thick and consistent with 70% VG.
This is a good but unspectacular custard vape. It's 50-150% more expensive than some of the custards I've been reviewing lately, and the honest truth is that I would take either Steam or ITC regardless of price over this custard. Both of those have more of what I am looking for in a custard, the lower price is just a happy bonus. A decent custard vape that doesn't live up to the reputation or price tag and could use more flavoring.
